Weekend Recap: Cocktails, Cupcakes & Good Friends

April 11, 2011

Does anyone remember the Sound of Music? Aside from “Edelweiss”, “The Hills are Alive” I think of Julie Andrews belting out her version of Friday Faves : “These are a few of my favorite things” since this weekend was absolutely gorgeous & full of great times, I feel like if I was actually creative I could put my own spin on these. However, for the sake of everyone’s sanity, I’ll list it off…

On Friday night my bestie from High School was in town, Kaitlin, and played bartender and made absolutely sinful cucumber basil gin martinis. Seriously, I’m not sure if a single drink could encapsulate all of my favorite things in one fancy glass.

We spent the night chatting, joking, munching and laughing! I was so happy that she was able to squeeze in a quick visit before her family obligations.

This is a riff on her mom’s Facebook photos where she is always making a cute face & holding a fancy cocktail πŸ™‚ Sorry Kay!

Saturday I woke up feeling a little out of it, but it was so gorgeous that I couldn’t resist heading out for a quick three mile run. Afterward I got ready & headed downtown to meet up with some fabulous blogger ladies! Emily, Lauren, Becky, Lizzy & Corey

It was an absolutely beautiful day, which meant everyone was out with there DOGS! Lauren and I just could NOT get enough of this adorable Bulldog puppy.

After walking around figuring out a lunch spot, we finally went to Antico Forno, one of my favorites in the North End. For anyone that is coming to Boston next weekend, definitely check this place out & try their pizza, it’s amazing!

We indulged in our sweet cravings and devoured delicious cupcakes (sorry Emily, I shamelessly stole this one!)

After more chatting we all went home and I had a quite night getting ready for Doyle’s Road Race 5 Miler on Sunday. I ran with Katy & her little brother Pete!

I forgot to grab my camera so I unfortunately missed documenting the race! It was extremely crowded and was not chip timed, so the three of us made our way to the front. Even though I stretched and foam rolled all morning, I still felt extremely tight and it had me feeling a little worried. They played the national anthem and then we were off!

The course was really beautiful, it ran through park areas and by a golf course, which is a great change from standard city runs amongst buildings. Throughout the first mile my legs still felt tight and I told myself to be patient and focus on form and I would find my groove. Well, the miles ticked by and my legs still felt like cinder blocks. I kept glancing down at my Garmin and I noticed I was holding somewhere between 8:20-8:30 pace, not bad for feeling less than stellar. The last mile wound through an extremely narrow path, so I ran the majority of it on the grass, which actually felt better on my legs, I was finally hitting my groove! I pushed it into high gear and finished just over 41 minutes. I forgot to turn my Garmin off in the chute, whoops!

I wasn’t disappointed with my time, but I was upset that I didn’t feel better. I guess we can’t always feel great for every race, right?! Katy & her brother both had great races, so I was excited for them! There was also a great post race party that went on for HOURS! The weather was beautiful so we just hung outside laughing and taking in the dance party that was going on behind Doyle’s Cafe in JP.

The weekend was great, but I am more than ready for some yoga tonight! Only a few days until tons of bloggers & super fast runners descend upon BOSTON!!!! πŸ™‚Β  Oh an if you’re around Boston Saturday April 16th, come to our Marathon Meet up at Cambridge, 1 over by Fenway! Be sure to come early to get a goody bag filled with awesome running shwag!

What did you do this weekend?

It was so much fun to meet you, Kim!! I can’t wait to talk to you more this weekend πŸ™‚
Great job on the 5 miler – you really picked it up that last mile!! It is frustrating to not feel great during a race, but sometimes there’s nothing you can really do and at least you were able to push through it.

Congrats on the race!! I know how tough it can be to push through when your legs feel like lead, but you did AND picked it up at the end!! Great last mile! Hope you’re having a good week and I’ll see you soon.
